CHARLES MARTIN is a photographer, filmmaker, writer and past chair of Comparative Literature at Queens College-City University of New York. He currently holds a Fulbright Grant and recently was a Fellow of The Hutchins Center for African & African American Research, Harvard University. Martin has produced the monographs Optical Thinking (2025), Because of Algiers (2013; and revised as a catalog for his exhibtion in Algiers, also 2013); Ferryboat (2000); and Home & Away (1997; which accompanied an exhibition at Queens College-City University of New York). His photographs are included in such books as Picturing New York: Photographs from The Museum of Modern Art (2009); Committed to the Image: Contemporary Black Photographers (London, Brooklyn Museum of Art in association with Merrill, 2001); Reflections in Black: A History of Black Photographers 1840 to the present (New York, Norton, 2000); and in O Clique da Viagem —the ninth episode of the documentary film, Caçadores da Alma— directed by Silvio Tendler, originally aired October 2017, on CANAL CURTA, NET (Brazil). Some of Martin’s films and videos –such as Ed Clark: A Brush with Success– are on-line at Umaxxi, as are groups of his photography on such websites as L'Oeil de la Photographie/The Eye of Photography and Charles Martin - Umaxxi.
Museum solo exhibitions include Museu Histórico e Artístico do Maranhão (São Luís do Maranhão, Brazil), Musée Public National d’Art Moderne et Contemporain (Algiers, Algeria), Musée de la Halle St. Pierre (Paris), and Alice Austen House Museum(Staten Island, NY). Martin has been in group exhibitions at The Museum of Modern Art, NY (including a traveling show that went to La Casa Encendida, Madrid, Spain; Museo di arte moderna e contemporanea di Trento e Rovereto, Rovereto, Italy; and Irish Museum of Modern Art, Dublin). Other museum group shows include Museu da Cidade de São Paulo; Brooklyn Museum of Art; and Smithsonian Institution, Anacostia Museum, Washington, DC. Martin exhibits frequently in New York, including eight solo shows at June Kelly Gallery, as well as “Faces, Figures, Fantasy,” the inaugural exhibition at Global Vision Art Gallery, Brooklyn (2024). Other solo shows have been at the Afro-American Cultural Center, Yale University (New Haven, CT), University of Wisconsin-Madison, West Virginia University, Universidade Federal de Mato Grosso (Cuiabá, Brazil), as well as galleries in Rio de Janeiro and São Paulo.
Martin has been Artist in Residence at the Center for Photography at Woodstock, and interviewed on the Cinque Artists Talk Program of the Romare Bearden Foundation. An in depth video interview with him has been made for The HistoryMakers, whose archives are housed in the Library of Congress (Washington, D.C.).
Outside of photography, in 2022, Martin was awarded—by the Academia Ludovicense de Letras, São Luís do Maranhão—the Comenda "Maria Firmina," (Medal of Honor and Diploma) for advancing interest in author Maria Firmina dos Reis, her work, and the culture of the State of Maranhão, Brazil—particularly through his introduction, “Uma Rara Visão Livre,” to the 1988 (3rd) edition of Maria Firmina’s novel Úrsula. That essay and edition focused attention on Maria Firmina, an early black novelist of Brazil, whose work gives keystone space to the humanity of its black characters, and finally has been recognized as ground-breaking and importantly innovative despite having largely been overlooked upon its publication (1859) and many subsequent years.
Martin’s projects have been awarded grants and fellowships from the Rockefeller Foundation, the National Endowment for the Humanities, the Tinker Foundation, Yale University, the Du Bois Institute at Harvard University, the City University of New York, and West Virginia University. In 1982 he was a United States delegate to III Congresso de Cultura Negra das Américas (Third Congress of Black Cultures in the Americas), organized by Abdias Nascimento and hosted by Pontifícia Universidade Católica de São Paulo (PUC-SP) [Pontifical Catholic University].
At Yale University Martin received a B.A. in English (1974), did graduate study in Afro-American Studies (1982-1984), and, with his dissertation, The Deminstrelization of Black Figures in Fiction, received the Ph.D. in Spanish and Portuguese (1988). He is fluent in Portuguese and French. He wrote for the Philadelphia Bulletinand the New London Day, and was editor of The Scene, newsletter of the Eugene O'Neill Memorial Theater Center, then directed by Lloyd Richards.
